Children of Light project still frame

In the 1960s, a Korean boy (16), kidnapped and assaulted at a juvenile center on a remote island, must escape with his rival to survive.

Minkyu Kang is an award-winning director, screenwriter, and editor based in the United States and South Korea. He received his BA in Film and TV Production at the University of Southern California in 2012 and Film MFA at Columbia University in 2022.

After two years of military service in South Korea (2015), he worked in the local Korean and American film industry. During that time, he directed/wrote/edited short films, TV commercials, documentaries, and art videos, which have been selected and screened at 50+ international film festivals.

Minkyu’s most recent short film, Children of Light, won the Grand Prize at the Director’s Guild of America & the Focus Features Award for Social and Cultural Impact, NBR Student Grant, and Norman Strauss Prize. It’s also shortlisted for the 2023 BAFTA Student Awards and advanced to the semifinal round of the 50th annual Student Academy Awards.

He works as a freelance filmmaker in Los Angeles, developing a feature script with a leading Korean Film Production company.
