Haruka Horiuchi is a filmmaker who moved from Japan to New York to pursue her passion for storytelling through film. After graduating from high school in Japan, she embarked on her filmmaking journey at Brooklyn College in New York. During her time at film school, Haruka created several short films, spanning both documentaries and narratives. She has a particular interest in creating low-budget sci-fi and fantasy narratives, bringing imaginative worlds to life with limited resources. She believes that limitations can push her out of her comfort zone and challenge her to become more creative. Her thesis film, The Visit, explores fantastical elements inspired by a traditional Japanese folktale. While writing the script, her main goal was to recreate the bittersweet emotions she felt while enjoying her favorite books, mangas, films and shows.
The Visit
Directed by Haruka Horiuchi
When Daniel is hanging out with his group of friends, he notices – there are eight persons in the group, even though they usually hang out in a group of seven. Everyone knows each other, and no one is new. As confusion spreads, Daniel recalls a folk tale about mischievous monsters.
