Can you talk about the germination of this idea, for you?
Jeymes Samuel: The film has been in my head since I was a kid.

Films like this are so clearly made with love and rely on character. What inspired you to tell this story in the form of a feature film?
Nikole Beckwith: In terms of what inspired the story, it was just curiosity.

The scope of the film is massive. How did you approach this subject?
I should say that I’m kind of obsessed with hidden histories and forgotten biographies.

Anora is such an intense and ferocious character, but there’s an understated vulnerability. How did you weave that into the performance?
Mikey Madison: I always saw her as someone who was deeply vulnerable on the inside but is constantly protecting herself by covering it up with anger and spunk.
